Music Making and Sharing

What are we about:

We welcome and encourage musicians to come along who would like to share their musical skills and are open to listening to other peoples` musical enthusiasm – with the instrument of their choice and the genre they like. Perhaps you compose your own music. We would love to hear it.

Next Date - Change to Routine:

SUNDAY, 19TH JANUARY

2pm - 5pm

Hounsdown Community Centre

Hounsdown Avenue, Totton, Southampton SO40 9FG

Please note changes to January meeting and possibly February 2025.

Join us by Invitation

You need to bring along your instrument and equipment, your pieces of music and, if you require one, a music stand. There is a tuned piano. If you are a singer and require accompanying, please bring your accompanist along.

All levels of ability are welcome (professionals to beginners). You might play by ear or you might read music.

Anybody who would like to play/sing a couple of pieces to non-judgemental

fellow musicians is welcome.

Our meetings start with a brief musical warm-up and then we take turns in playing

and listening to each other. There is solo and duet or small group playing of pieces

people have practiced and want us to hear. We share our passion with perfected

pieces and/or pieces in progress. Our space is open for experimentation, risk taking,

and appreciation.

We welcome adults, young people from age 16, and supervised children.

Winter 2023/2024

Appreciating each others' musical instruments and music.

"Another Saturday afternoon with a great atmosphere."

"These Saturday meetings make me want to polish my pieces and improve my playing."

"I really enjoyed the meeting [...]. Meeting new people, hearing different music, and getting to play and sing. What's not to like?"

"Thank you for a wonderful afternoon yesterday at the Music Making and Sharing group."

"Music Making and Sharing is a space to meet fellow music lovers who work on putting pieces together and share them."

"Achieve success on your own terms by emphasizing the flows and hiding the errors as hidden intentions. Perfection is boring."

"They say variety is the `spice of life` and here it is in music genres, age group and instruments. Such a lovely atmosphere meeting other musicians, admiring their playing and the work they put into it and then, how it inspires you."

My musical journey:

I am a late starter on the classical accordion (instrument with a free bass/converter). I was thirty and was not able to read music.

Over the years I had accordion lessons with Peter Whitely in Manchester, Peter Anders and Marie Wärme in Copenhagen/DK, Christine Carrington, Ingrid Gould and Julie Luck in the UK. I worked through the grades with the British Accordion College. In 1999 I studies for Music A Level at Itchen College, voice being my second instrument. I attended various Jazz courses with tutors such as Stuart Riley (Manchester) in the 1990s, and Mike Bassey at the Godshill/New Forest Jazz Summerschool (he played with Loose Tubes a long time ago).

In the previous years, I attended the Martin Read (late music director of CoMA South) Foundation annual festival, to share contemporary music with keen musicians of all ages, and support composers.

MRF Festival Concert '23 Part 2 - alumni & Martin's: The Death of Colonel Boles

In 2022 I played the accordion part in Samuel Pradalie's piece Memoirs of an Amnesiac: The Life of Erik Satie at Têtê-a-Têtê Opera Festival in London - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoHXuiXIYTM

In 2000 I was a founding member of CoMA South.

I play with Caminito Tango Orchestra in London under Caroline Persall and other members of the London Tango Orchestra. In the Dorset Accordion Orchestra I play the 4th part. I play with the Bellow and Waves Orchestra.

I sang for many years with the Concord Singers and Vox Humana in the South of England.

My favourite music genres are classical, contemporary classical, early music and Tango.

I enjoy playing duets pieces with Hilary, mainly pieces she composes and arranges for us.
